Nearly 1000 children took to Hackney’s streets by bike on Thursday 28th June as Bike Around the Borough returns for its eighth outing.
Over 40 schools took part in the mass bike ride, which two years ago set the world record for the highest number of people cycling in a continuous ‘bike bus’.
This year, the event is sponsored by British Cycling, the nation’s governing body for cycling, along with Volker Highways and Berkeley Homes.
Children gathered at Hackney Downs, travelling from there to Clissold Park, where the bike bus picked up more participants, before heading onto London Fields, past Hackney Town Hall and back to Hackney Downs.
Bike Around the Borough aims to promote cycling among the borough’s children, giving them the chance to practice the skills they have learned through national standards cycle training and to help them see how easy it is to travel around Hackney by bike.
After the ride took place, there was a summer cycling celebration which was opened to the public at Hackney Downs, with food, drink and cycling-themed activities at the park.
