Year 1 Phonics workshop FLIP EYFS and year 1
At St Mary’s synthetic phonics is taught from Nursery to year 2 every day. Phonics is a way of teaching children how to read and write. It helps children hear, identify and use different sounds that distinguish one word from another in the English language.
Written language can be compared to a code, so knowing the sounds of individual letters and how those letters sound when they’re combined will help children decode words as they read.Understanding phonics will also help children know which letters to use when they are writing words.
– Ask your child to practice the Phase 3 and Phase 5 sounds using their sound mat regularly.
– Come to reading morning on a Friday in Reception and Nursery.
– Reading: Ask your child to segment the words and then blend them to help them to read the words.
– Writing: Give your children words from their spelling test to spell and ask them to segment them and then blend them. Also, ask them to put them into sentences.
Spelling Test: Each week one of the focus sounds covered in phonic sessions is given as part of spellings. 4 words containing focus sounds and 3 tricky/HFW words.
Alien words games: Give your child a sound and get them to make up their own alien words using sounds e.g ee……zeeg neech.
